Nursing education is typically a specialty within a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program. In order to study nursing education, you must be a currently licensed experienced RN, and in most cases you must also have completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) although you may, in some cases, be able to enroll via an RN to MSN option in which you will complete the requirements to earn both the BSN and MSN.
In a nursing education MSN program, you will take the standard MSN core courses such as theoretical foundations of nursing, nursing research processes, legal and ethical issues in nursing and disease prevention. You'll also take courses geared specifically towards nursing education, such as theories of nursing education, learning concepts and strategies, and nursing curriculum design.
With an MSN in nursing education, you may find yourself working as a nurse educator in a technical school or as a staff educator in a health care facility. If you wish to work as a nursing educator at the university level, you may wish to pursue advanced nursing education coursework at the doctoral level, with a PhD in nursing or a Doctor of Nursing Science (DNSc).
