Did your mom or your teacher ever tell you to stop wasting your time playing video games? Well, you can have the last laugh if you turn your passion for gaming into a lucrative career in video game design! Yes, this is an actual degree program, and it's one offered by many prestigious colleges and universities nationwide.
At the entry level, you can earn an Associate of Applied Arts (AAS) in such subjects as computer game design or electronic game and simulation design. In such a program, you will learn to identify the basic elements of different types of games, particularly those elements that work best in a digital platform. You'll lean how to evaluate games, and then all of the art and the science that goes into designing and creating your own games.
At the bachelor's level, many computer science degree programs allow for a specialization in game design, while others offer specific degree programs, usually the Bachelor of Science in computer game design or gaming and simulation. At some of the larger universities you will have access to some state-of-the-art computer labs and equipment with which to create your games. Upon completion of such a program, you could find work not only with one of the many game software companies, but also in creating certain types of marketing applications, education software, or simulation training systems used by various industries, government agencies and the military.
You can even earn a master's degree (MA or MFA) in game design, perhaps one specializing in "serious games" meant to educate, as well as entertain. As many educational theorists have speculated, gaming may well be the educational platform of the future.
