Online Degrees in Electrical Engineering

Electrical Engineering Degrees

Electrical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with electronics and electricity. Electrical engineers are involved in the design of everything from electric power stations and telecommunication systems to household appliances. With a degree in electrical engineering, you could work as a design engineer, research engineer, software engineer or systems design engineer, or branch out into related fields such as computer science, aerospace engineering or biomedical engineering.

A bachelor's degree program in electrical engineering will involve courses such as engineering programming concepts, circuit theory, electric and digital circuits, digital logic design, analog and digital electronics, electronic circuits design, device physics, signal and system theory, engineering probability, electromagnetic theory, electromagnetic wave propagation and engineering ethics. You may also choose an area of specialization such as computer engineering, communications and signal processing, controls microelectronics, power systems and electrophysics.

Although a bachelor's degree will get you into an entry-level electrical engineering position, you may find that you need a graduate degree in order to advance in the field. Both the Master of Science (MS) and PhD are available in electrical engineering, and are usually intensive, research-based programs focused on either information systems and sciences (computer engineering, communications, signal processing and controls) or electronic sciences and devices (microelectronics and electrophysics).
