Computer engineering combines knowledge from the field of computer science with practical applications from the field of electrical engineering. As a computer engineering major, you could prepare for a career in circuit design, computer design, operating systems design or robotics. The industries in which you could find work include computer firms, electrical and electronics firms, utility companies, the telecommunications industry, surveying and engineering firms, manufacturers, automotive companies and the aerospace industry.

In a computer engineering bachelor's degree program, usually a Bachelor of Science (BS), you will learn about subjects including embedded systems, algorithms, database systems, digital systems, digital signal processing, integrated circuit design, systems engineering, VLSI design and fabrication, operating systems, programming fundamentals, software engineering and human-computer interaction. You will also learn the communication, teamwork skills, and interdisciplinary problem solving skills necessary to solve most computer engineering problems. As with many engineering specialties, this program is very intensive, and may take five or even six years to complete.

A Master of Science (MS) degree program in computer engineering will allow you to pursue independent research in an area of your choosing. Some of the areas in which you could work include that of fault-tolerant computing, real-time systems, artificial intelligence (AI), neural networks and fuzzy logic, image compression and processing.
