Online Degrees in Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineering Degrees

The field of chemical engineering is where science meets manufacturing, as chemical engineers actually take raw materials and figure out how to turn them into finished products. Textiles, cosmetics, snack foods, fuel...all of these products owe their existence to the work of a chemical engineer. With a degree in chemical engineering, you'll be valuable to employers in fields including the pharmaceutical industry, the military, the biomedical industry, the automotive industry, and the aerospace industry, as well as in the latest hot field of "green technology". You could also work for a government agency or a consulting firm, particularly one that specializes in biotechnology or environmental regulations.

A Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering is sufficient to begin your career, although the program is a very rigorous one and may take five or even six years to complete. Courses studied may include such subjects as semi-conductor processing, electronic processing, electrochemical processing, biochemical and biomedical processes.

In addition to earning a bachelor's degree, you may need to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exams and gain four years of work experience in order to obtain licensure. You could also earn a master's in chemical engineering to broaden your employment opportunities, or a PhD in the subject if you'd like to work as a researcher or teach at the university level.
