If you would like to play a vital role in the rapidly-expanding healthcare industry, but you can't stand the sight of blood, you may wish to pursue a career in the field of healthcare administration and management. As a healthcare administrator, you'll plan and facilitate the delivery of medical services in hospitals, clinics and other healthcare facilities. You'll need to be familiar with medical terminology and practices, and you'll also need to keep up with the latest trends in health informatics technology. On top of this, you'll need the managerial skills to keep your workplace running smoothly.
A bachelor's degree in healthcare administration will enable you to begin your career in healthcare administration, but you may find that you need to earn a master's degree to advance to the upper management level. In your degree program you'll cover such areas as leadership, finance, economics, organizational behavior, quantitative analysis and planning, as well as learning how these disciplines pertain to the specific requirements of the healthcare industry.
Upon graduation with a bachelor's degree, you could find work in a healthcare organization as a project consultant, marketing assistant, operating assistant, or health provider representative. At the mid-career level, which you may reach with experience and/or by earning a master's degree, you may work as a department manager, case manager, ambulatory care manager, contract negotiator, marketing director, or controller. At the top level, where you will need both a graduate degree and a number of years in the healthcare administration field, you may advance to the level of chief executive officer, chief financial officer, chief operating officer, or vice president for your particular section or service area.
There are many career options available in the healthcare industry, and as you can see not all of them need to be in the traditional medical setting.
