If you are interested in a career in teaching, but do not have any particular area of specialization in mind, you may wish to pursue a degree in education studies. Usually the Bachelor of Education degree, which is the basic qualification for a teaching credential, requires students to choose an area of specialization in either early childhood education, elementary education or a secondary subject area, such as Spanish or history. With an education studies concentration, you'll be free to select electives from different areas in the field of education, preparing you to teach at multiple grade levels or in more than one subject area.
Usually education degree programs at the master's and doctorate levels tend to be even more specialized than bachelor's level education programs but you can, if you try, find graduate general education degree programs. A general education focus is appropriate if your professional goals are interdisciplinary in nature or cover a range of different educational topics. In a general education program you may choose to combine educational areas of focus with studies from related fields outside the education curriculum. You may also have the option of creating your own self-designed program in education, combining your various interests into a specialty of your choosing such as urban education or international baccalaureate (IB) education.
