As an educational administrator, you could hold the job title of principal, assistant principal, chairperson, department head or dean, but whatever your title, you will play a vital role in determining how your school is run and whether it is succeeding in its mission to educate its students. You may have to play many roles, from making sure the building and grounds are maintained, to ensuring the cafeteria is operational to selecting and evaluating school faculty. You may even be called upon to play an instructional role when needed. An educational administration degree program will give you the training you need in order to succeed at heading up your educational institution.
Educational administration degree programs are typically offered at the master's level, and focus on such skills as the coordination of school and/or system wide activities, the selection and evaluation of standardized tests, curriculum design, the creation and enforcement of discipline methods and effective interaction with faculty, students and parents.
At the PhD level, educational administration instruction will be research-intensive, focused on theory and methodology. Such a degree will prepare you to work at the university administrative level, or in the field of educational research and policy, perhaps for a government agency or a private foundation or "think tank".
