Distance education is an ever-expanding field. Once limited to correspondence courses where instructional materials were distributed by mail, this type of learning took a leap forward with the advent of television technology (particularly the VCR, which allowed students to record televised classes and watch them at a convenient time), and then made enormous strides once the internet allowed for interactive online learning. Distance education courses are now offered at all levels, from K-12 courses all the way up through doctoral programs that can be completed entirely online.
With the rise in distance learning comes an increased need for educators who are comfortable with the necessary technology and the methods required to make distance instruction successful. Graduate certificate and master's degree programs are available in distance and online learning and virtual classroom technology, and even a PhD program in instructional design for online learning. These programs are specifically tailored to prepare teachers in such matters as online program instructional design, computer applications and technology for online classes, monitoring and assessing online student learning, and instructional trends in distance learning. As these programs are themselves offered online, instructors will gain firsthand insight of what is involved in distance learning from the student's as well as the instructor's perspective.
