The field of curriculum design involves setting the basic standards and rules that govern what is taught in any particular education system. In addition to helping create the curriculum, curriculum designers will also help manage the review process which evaluates how the curriculum aligns with learning methods assessments and outcomes. As a curriculum designer, you'll be selecting the learning strategies most appropriate for your school or organization, and may also be asked to recommend the learning materials that should be purchased and supervise how these materials are distributed. To succeed as a curriculum designer, you will need a fundamental understanding of the concept of teaching (most curriculum designers have spent a number of years in the classroom), as well as strong skills in research, organization, administration and written and verbal communication.
The study of curriculum design is undertaken at the master's level, usually as a Master of Education (MEd) with a concentration in curriculum and instruction. Some institutions will offer the Master of Arts (MA) of Master of Science (MS) degree in education with a curriculum design focus. Whichever degree you pursue, you could find employment with a school system, government agency or even a corporation, as many businesses are turning to curriculum specialists to help them develop relevant, effective training materials.
