Adult education involves the teaching, directing or guiding of adult learners. This learning can take place in any number of settings, and take any number of forms - from teaching students the skills they'll need to earn their GED to providing continuing education courses for professionals needing to keep up skills and certification to providing instruction in the fundamentals of the English language to recent immigrants. You could find yourself teaching at a community college, an adult education center, or even online.
Qualifications for the different types of adult education vary by subject. In some cases, all you will need to do is demonstrate a certain level of expertise in the subject being taught ? for example, if you are a professional chef, this will probably qualify you to teach cooking classes. In other cases, you will need specific certification, such as TESOL or TESL certification for teaching English to speakers of other languages.
If you wish to position yourself as an adult education specialist, however, you may wish to earn a master's degree in education with an adult education specialty. With such a degree, you will be well qualified to pursue opportunities in adult instruction in the fields of human resource development and training, community-based education, continuing education and distance learning.
