Education Degrees
If you are interested in a career in education, your first step will be to earn an education bachelor's degree. You may choose to specialize in early
education, elementary education, middle school education, or subject-specific areas such as math, foreign languages, social studies or physical education.
As a part of your degree program, you will typically complete a student teaching practicum which will give you actual classroom experience. With a
bachelor's in education alone, you can find work at a private school, but if you wish to work in the public school system (which typically pays much
higher salaries and has better benefits, if shorter holidays), you will need to go through your state certification board and complete a series of tests
called Praxis. The Praxis I will test you on your basic academic skills, and depending on the area of licensure you seek, you may need to complete a Praxis II that will measure your subject-specific knowledge, as well as your teaching skills. If you wish to advance in your teaching career, you may wish to
pursue a master's degree in education - at the public school level, you will typically be paid a higher salary with this qualification. One particular
area that is well worth looking into is the field of special education. With a master's degree in this field you will be in high demand, and may even be
paid a signing bonus for accepting a job with the school system of your choice.
