The field of law enforcement is one that is growing, and employment opportunities in this field are projected to continue expanding, as there is very little likelihood that criminal activity will undergo a drastic decline in the near future. If you'd like to work in the field of crime investigation and prevention, there are a number of degree options available to you in police science and law enforcement.
Associate-level law enforcement courses will prepare you for immediate employment in a police department, private security firm, corrections agency or as a court officer or bailiff. You will take courses covering a broad range of topics related to the field of criminal justice such as criminology, criminal law, criminal investigation, emergency medicine and juvenile justice.
At the bachelor's level you may wish to pursue a degree such as the Bachelor of Science (BS) in criminal justice - law enforcement or the BS in police science. In addition to providing you with the general education courses in liberal arts and sciences that you won't get with an associate degree, the BS programs concentrate on management and leadership aspects of law enforcement and on developing professional communication skills. Such a degree will allow you to pursue a supervisory position in a law enforcement agency or a career in federal law enforcement.
