A degree in sales can be your ticket to a successful, and highly profitable, career in the field of retail. Although you can certainly work in a retail position without a degree, having specific training in the field will give you the skills to stand out and earn higher commissions, as well as qualifying you to advance into a supervisory or managerial role. Your sales degree could qualify you to work as a store manager, or even go into purchasing as a career.
There are a number of sales and retail associate degree options available, including AAS degrees in marketing and sales management and in retail management and programs targeted to specific industries such as the AAS in fashion and retail marketing. These programs will give you a basic understanding of the concept of marketing, and how consumer desire affects product availability and vice-versa. You will also focus on communication skills, specifically as they pertain to the sales associate/customer relationship.
If you wish to pursue further education in the field, positioning yourself to enter the retail field at the managerial level, you may prefer to earn a bachelor's degree in an areas such as sales and marketing, retail management or marketing and sales communication. At the bachelor's level you'll explore specific sales techniques, but also delve more deeply into the fundamentals of marketing and touch upon such areas as consumer psychology and business law and ethics.
