Project management means just what it says; you, as project manager, direct any given project your organization undertakes from beginning to successful completion. You will be involved in initiating the project, planning all of the necessary steps, making sure these steps are carried out, controlling the process as it takes place, and then wrapping up all the final details. You will also need to take into account such matters as blocking out the time it will take for the project, making sure the necessary funding and personnel are available to complete the task, procuring the necessary resources, and managing project time, quality and risk.
At the bachelor's level, you may choose a project management specialization within a Bachelor of Business Administration program. Such a program will focus on critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills and present team projects and case studies relevant to the field of project management. You may also earn a Bachelor of Science in Technical Project Management that focuses on how projects are managed online.
Master's degrees in project management, including MBAs with a project management focus, will go more into the specific aspects of how projects are managed, tracking each step in the process and providing tools for setting standards and monitoring progress. A graduate certificate may be of interest to you if you are a professional currently employed in a managerial position and you'd like to add project management skills to your portfolio, as a certificate program will take less time to complete than a master's degree.
