Managing the nonprofit agency can be a very rewarding career. Rewarding in the sense that you can earn a decent salary, but also in the sense that you can take satisfaction from knowing that you are also working to promote a good cause. Although many of the skills you'll need for successfully managing a not-for-profit agency are the same as those you'd use to manage a corporation, the main difference lies in the bottom line; whereas a corporation is run to generate profit and benefit stockholders, your agency is run to benefit the particular cause it represents such as housing the homeless, preserving the wetlands or furthering educational opportunities for underprivileged youth.
Your main challenge will be to come up with sources of revenue by writing grants, soliciting major donors, and engaging in fundraising activities. You will also need to recruit volunteer labor, attract positive publicity, and ensure that your organization's mission is being carried out to the best of its ability.
If you wish to prepare for a career in nonprofit management, you may choose to major in business administration or public administration at the bachelor's level, although you may be able to find bachelor's level courses that deal specifically with the management of nonprofit agencies. At the master's level, you can find Master of Science (MS) programs in nonprofit management and leadership, Master of Public Administration (MPA) programs with nonprofit administration concentrations, Master of Business Administration (MBA) in nonprofit management programs, and graduate certificates in nonprofit management. Doctoral degrees in nonprofit management are also available if you're interested in pursuing in-depth scholarship and research into the particular issues that affect not-for-profit agencies.
