A degree in management information systems (MIS) can prepare you to provide and manage data systems and facilities for the processing and retrieving of internal business information. You will also learn to select systems, train the employees of your organization in their operation, and respond to external requests for data.
A Bachelor of Science in management information systems will instruct you in management control systems, cost and accounting information systems, personnel information systems, business systems networking, data storage and security, report preparation, operation and maintenance of computer equipment and facilities, operator training and supervision, and MIS policy and planning. You will gain a mastery of data base, systems, networking, object-oriented and web programming technologies, and use these to develop information systems for your organization. With this degree you may find employment in end-user or operating systems support, business programming, systems administration, data base analysis, web design, systems analysis or other IT roles.
You may also choose to earn a Master of Science in management information systems to further develop your abilities and allow you to play a management or leadership role in developing and evaluating your organization's information systems. With the MIS master's degree you could work in systems analysis and/or systems design, project management, systems architecture, database and knowledge management, application development, or find a position as a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) or a Chief Information Officer (CIO).
