The study of business communication focuses on the most effective ways to communicate necessary information, both inside and outside of an organization or business, and when directed towards clients, customers or the general public. Different models of business communication will be taught, with particular attention paid to how methods may vary when business is conducted internationally. A business communications degree is a good foundation for any type of administrative or management position, and it will be of particular benefit if you plan to go into "high contact" areas such as public relations, marketing or human resources.
If you'd prefer to write for a living, a business communications degree can enable you to find work as a copywriter, grant writer, or even to work exciting new fields, such as corporate blogging.
At the undergraduate level you may pursue a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in business communications, and you can choose to specialize in areas such as communication management, sales and marketing. These programs may incorporate enough real-world learning experiences and internship opportunities to allow you to put the skills you've learned to immediate use.
Master of Arts and Master of Science degrees in Business Communications are available, as is a Master of Business Communications (MBC) degree. If your goal is in a business leadership position, an MBA in business communications may be your best bet. Any of these programs should allow you to focus on special areas such as public relations, marketing communications or business writing.
